Thanks to Google, it’s already possibly to mirror your Android screen over to the Chromecast through select handsets like the Nexus 5, but Koush is now getting ready to bring your Android screen to the desktop as well, via his AllCast app. While it was already possible for handsets like the Nexus 5 to cast over an Android display to a computer running the Chromecast Receiver extension, Koush says that he has now made a change that will allow screen casting to work with virtually any device.
In short, he has rewritten the Mirror to Chrome feature on top of Broadway.js, a Javascript h264 decoder. This means you’ll now longer need a device that supports WebRTC/VP8, and so just about any handset that can run the AllCast app should be able to handle screen mirroring. That said, the quality of the experience could certainly varying depending on the handset or tablet your using.
It’s also important to note that there is a bit of lag and delay when casting your Android screen to Chromecast, but it’s still a pretty handy feature. At the moment the updated AllCast app has yet to arrive to Google Play, though Koush says he’ll release the new feature soon. We’ll be sure to update this post when we learn that the feature has officially been pushed out.
